Ola Unveils Ambitious Plan for India’s First AI Chip Family

Ola Electric, known for its electric vehicles, is making a bold move into the world of artificial intelligence hardware. The company has announced plans to develop India’s first family of AI chips, with the initial offering slated for release in 2026, via its family of foundational models.

The first chip, designed for inferencing and fine-tuning, will cater to trillion-parameter AI models. Ola claims it will outperform current state-of-the-art technology while consuming less power. This development could potentially accelerate AI adoption across various sectors in India.

Ola’s ambitions extend further with the Bodhi 2 chip, targeted for 2028. This more advanced chip aims to support training, inferencing, and fine-tuning for models with over 10 trillion parameters. The company envisions it as a cornerstone for exascale supercomputing.

In addition to AI-specific chips, Ola is developing a general-purpose server CPU based on ARM architecture and an AI-rich chip for consumer devices like smartphones and wearables.

This initiative represents a significant step for India’s technological landscape, potentially reducing dependence on foreign chip manufacturers and fostering domestic innovation in AI hardware. If successful, Ola’s chip family could position India as a key player in the global AI hardware market.
