In a significant turnaround for Intel, the tech giant has announced two major developments that promise to bolster its future operations in central Ohio. The company has entered into a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar partnership with Amazon to manufacture AI chips, while also securing a $3 billion investment from the federal government for military chip production.
These announcements come as welcome news for the region, which has been anticipating the economic impact of Intel’s new facility in New Albany. Ohio Chamber of Commerce President Steve Stiver confirmed that both AI and military chips will be produced at this site.
“Good news for Intel which means great news for Central Ohio,” declared Stiver.
The partnership with Amazon is seen as a crucial vote of confidence in Intel’s long-term strategy. OSU Professor Ned Hill underlined the significance of this deal, noting: “For Intel, it was getting a first customer of size and stature that sends a signal that the strategy is the long term strategy and they’re going to stick to it.”
The $3 billion federal investment for military chip production also addresses national security concerns. A retired major general of the United States Army and Ohio National Guard expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of domestic chip production for military equipment.
Despite these positive developments, Stiver pointed out that the federal government still needs to deliver on its initial promise of $8.5 billion in CHIPS Act funding. He urged action, stating: “Not a single penny has flowed to them yet.”
The news has already had a positive impact on Intel’s stock, which has risen about 13% in recent days, signaling renewed investor confidence in the company’s future.
