South Korea Announces Ambitious Plan to Dominate Global AI Landscape

South Korea is positioning itself to become a world leader in artificial intelligence (AI), with a comprehensive strategy that aims to place the country among the top three global AI powerhouses. In a recent interview, Presidential Secretary for AI and Digital Innovation, Dr. Jong-in Yeo, outlined South Korea’s vision for the future of AI.

President Yoon Suk Yeol has launched a high-level AI committee to develop national policies and guide the country’s AI initiatives. This move comes as South Korea invests billions into AI development, leveraging its existing strengths in semiconductors, manufacturing, and technology.

“South Korea has a robust AI industry already with several achievements,” Yeo stated. He pointed to the country’s leadership in high-bandwidth memory and its early launch of generative AI services with large language models.

The government’s strategy focuses on creating a comprehensive AI ecosystem, encompassing semiconductors, platforms, software frameworks, and AI applications. Yeo emphasized the importance of elevating South Korean companies to global leadership positions in their respective sectors.

South Korea is also taking a proactive stance on AI ethics and governance. President Yoon has proposed a “Digital Bill of Rights” at the UN General Assembly, focusing on freedom, fairness, safety, innovation and solidarity.

“We are at a point where we need to maximize the innovative value brought by AI while minimizing its potential side effects and misuse,” Yeo explained. He expressed confidence that South Korea’s efforts will contribute to “an era of shared prosperity for humanity” through AI advancements.
