OpenAI has introduced Study Mode, a new feature within ChatGPT designed to foster deeper student engagement and critical thinking. Unlike traditional interactions, Study Mode encourages users to actively participate in the learning process by asking questions, prompting reflection, and withholding direct answers until students demonstrate understanding.
The feature is now available to logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with a rollout to Edu subscribers — primarily students under school-wide plans — expected in the coming weeks.
As millions of students incorporate ChatGPT into their academic routines, OpenAI aims to position the platform as a meaningful educational companion rather than a shortcut to answers. Study Mode arrives amid growing debate over generative AI’s impact on learning, particularly concerns around diminished critical thinking. OpenAI sees this launch as a foundational step toward building a more responsible and interactive AI-based study tool, with plans to expand its educational offerings and share insights into AI usage in schools.
