- Pre-season testing showed AI performance closing in on human benchmarks, setting up a Human vs. AI exhibition between TUM’s car and former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat, while the program also includes supercar parade laps, a UAE-wide STEM competition and a technology-focused fan zone supported by a broad network of event partners.
The world’s largest autonomous car race is set to run in Abu Dhabi today, with global viewers able to watch a broadcast Nov. 16 on Abu Dhabi Media Network, StarzPlay, Motorsport TV and the official A2RL YouTube channel.
According to the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, or A2RL, tickets for the Yas Marina Circuit’s main grandstand have already reached full capacity and a VR option will again allow fans to experience the race from inside the action, with real-time data and on-track perspectives streamed directly into the platform.
A2RL’s Season 2 Grand Final marks the first time six fully self-driving racecars will compete together at speed in a multi-car, 20-lap contest. The finalists –TUM, Unimore, Kinetiz, TII Racing, PoliMOVE and Constructor — advanced through an 18-month development cycle and a stringent qualification round held in October. Germany’s TUM, the reigning champion, enters from pole position after edging out Italy’s Unimore in a head-to-head sprint during the multi-car qualifier. Five additional teams will compete in a separate Silver Race to determine their final standings and continue refining their autonomous-driving algorithms.
A2RL indicated pre-season testing has highlighted how quickly performance is advancing in AI-driven racing. Unimore became the first team to surpass a benchmark lap time set by a professional driver, signaling a narrowing performance gap between human instinct and machine precision. The event will also feature a Human vs. AI exhibition, with TUM’s autonomous racer set to face former Formula One driver Daniil Kvyat in a showcase run.
The race program includes supercar parade laps by Group 63 and the awards ceremony for the A2RL STEM Competition, which brought together 140 students from across the UAE using AWS DeepRacer models. A fan zone surrounding the circuit will highlight broader advances in robotics and mobility, with humanoid robot demonstrations, interactive technology exhibits and entertainment aimed at families and motorsport enthusiasts.
A2RL is backed by SteerAI and a broad network of sponsors, including du as a leading partner; AWS and Abu Dhabi Mobility as official partners; Wio and Castore as official supporters; and technical contributors such as PACETEQ, Live in Five, Meccanica 42 and Vislink. Additional event partners include Abu Dhabi Gaming, Miral and the UAE Cybersecurity Council.
