OSRF Initiates Open Source Robotics Alliance to Bolster Open-Source Software Initiatives

Last week, the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF) unveiled the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA) to enhance governance and sustain the Robot Operating System community’s vibrancy.

Embracing a model akin to that of the Linux and Eclipse Foundations, OSRA seeks to unify stakeholders in shaping and supporting OSRF’s projects like ROS, Gazabo, and Open-RMF. A Technical Governance Committee (TGC) will guide the alliance, under the OSRF Board’s oversight.

High-profile members like NVIDIA and Qualcomm have already joined, alongside a diverse group of organizations and companies across membership tiers. OSRA encourages broader participation from the robotics community, offering various membership levels detailed on its website.

“NVIDIA develops with ROS 2 to bring accelerated computing and AI to developers, researchers, and commercial applications.

As an inaugural platinum member of OSRA, we will collaborate to advance open-source robotics throughout the ecosystem by aiding development efforts and providing governance and continuity.”

Gordon Grigor, vice president of robotics software at NVIDIA

“From the numerous contributions made by our team at Intrinsic across projects like ROS, Gazebo, and Open-RMF as part of the open robotics community, to our acquisition of the Open Source Robotics Corp., we’ve invested deeply in the open-source community, and we look forward to continuing our support of the ecosystem as an inaugural member of the OSRA.”
