OpenAI Retires GPT-4o and Older ChatGPT Models in Platform Update

OpenAI has begun removing access to several legacy ChatGPT models, including GPT-4o, as part of a broader platform transition toward newer artificial intelligence systems. The change also affects GPT-5, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and o4-mini, which are being retired from public access.

The GPT-4o model had drawn attention in legal and safety discussions related to user behavior and AI interaction risks, including concerns about sycophancy in conversational systems. OpenAI had originally planned to retire the model earlier but kept it available to paid subscribers following user feedback. The company indicated that only a small portion of users continued using GPT-4o despite its large overall user base.

The deprecation reflects OpenAI’s ongoing effort to consolidate model offerings and prioritize newer AI systems.
