Jony Ive & Sam Altman’s New Venture Targets $1B for AI-Powered Personal Device Production

Jony Ive, the former design lead at Apple, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, are actively pursuing funding to launch a novel company focused on creating an artificial intelligence-powered personal device, distinct from current smartphones, according to The Information.

Initiated discussions in fall 2023 have progressed, as reported by the AI Insider in September, with the duo aiming to secure at least $1 billion. Potential investors include Thrive Capital, Emerson Collective, and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son, who also suggests involvement from Arm, another of his investments.

This ambitious project draws on the tech prominence and personal networks of its founders, potentially impacting investment dynamics due to their stature. The device’s specifics remain under wraps, but its development could position Ive in competition with Apple, especially as Apple advances AI in its iOS ecosystem. Altman’s venture into hardware, while leading OpenAI, raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and corporate governance within OpenAI.

Critics wonder about the device’s purpose, especially with AI capabilities becoming standard in smartphones, and the ethical implications of Altman’s dual roles.
