Apple Music Introduces AI Transparency Metadata to Identify AI-Generated Content on the Platform

Apple Music is preparing to introduce new transparency metadata designed to identify when artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of music distributed on its platform. According to industry reporting, Apple informed record labels and distribution partners that the update will allow them to tag AI-generated or AI-assisted elements during the content upload process.

The new metadata fields will enable distributors to specify whether AI was involved in components such as artwork, the audio track, lyrical composition, or music videos. The system expands traditional metadata categories — such as artist name, album title, and genre — to include disclosures related to AI usage in music production.

The move reflects growing industry demand for transparency as generative AI tools become more widely used in music creation. However, the tagging system will rely on labels and distributors to voluntarily flag AI involvement when submitting content.

Other streaming platforms are exploring similar approaches, while some companies are also testing automated AI-detection systems to identify synthetic or AI-assisted media.
