China’s Baidu Set to Release AI-Powered Smart Glasses to Challenge Meta

Baidu, the Chinese tech giant, is set to unveil a new pair of smart glasses equipped with a built-in AI assistant, positioning the product as a rival to Meta’s popular offerings. The announcement is expected to come at the company’s annual Baidu World event in Shanghai next week.

According to sources, the glasses will feature the ability to take photos, record videos, and integrate with Baidu’s own AI-powered search engine, Ernie. This integration will allow users to interact with the voice assistant through the glasses.

The move comes as Baidu faces challenges in monetizing its AI services in China, where consumers are reportedly unwilling to pay for such offerings.

“Consumers in China are not willing to pay for AI services that much. The monetization prospects have been quite difficult,” explained tech reporter Annabelle Droulers in a recent Bloomberg report.

By integrating AI into hardware, Baidu aims to find new avenues for revenue generation. Droulers noted that the hardware division responsible for the smart glasses, Baidu DuerOS, has a strong pedigree in the space, already producing voice-activated speakers and wireless earbuds.

The new smart glasses are expected to be priced lower than Meta’s offerings, potentially retailing for less than $299 USD. This could provide Baidu with a competitive edge in the Chinese market, where local brands have been challenging global players like Apple in the wearable tech segment.

Droulers stressed the importance of the timing, stating: “It is an interesting time for the company, given that we’ve actually seen Ernie being pushed out from the number one position for chatbots within China. Bytedance’s equivalent now has the top spot, so it is again just trying to get that money out of it and continue to try and maintain a market lead in this space as well.”

With the unveiling of the AI-powered smart glasses, Baidu is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for innovative wearable technology in China, while also seeking to solidify its position in the highly competitive AI landscape.
