Satya Nadella on the Future of SaaS, Agents and Opportunities for Indian Engineers

In a recent interview, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella talked about the future of software-as-a-service (SaaS), the role of agents in technology, and how India can seize opportunities in the evolving AI landscape. Nadella provided an in-depth look at how AI and emerging models are reshaping the tech industry, laying the groundwork for a profound shift in how applications are built and utilized.

Reflecting on the transition from SaaS to agent-driven workflows, Nadella remarked: “The thing about agents is they are not going to be bound to essentially anyone’s SaaS application and its data.” He explained how agents orchestrate workflows across applications, creating a seamless experience. “Right now, I go to Copilot and say, ‘At sales,’ which touches Dynamics CRM, brings back information from Office 365, and puts it into Pages. The entire workflow happens without me logging into multiple platforms.”

Nadella predicted a future where agents would become commonplace, akin to spreadsheets today.

“Two years from now, we’re going to say, ‘Yeah, agents. I build them like all day, like I build docs and spreadsheets,’” he said, seeing a future where agents become integral to both work and innovation.

Addressing India’s role in this transformation, Nadella was optimistic about its entrepreneurial and developer ecosystem.

“India has tremendous opportunity. The total developer community here, the entrepreneurial energy — it’s unparalleled,” he noted. He urged Indian companies to embrace the agentic shift, stating: “The next-generation SaaS company that says, ‘I’m going to embrace these agents’ has a massive opportunity. It’s a massive attack vector on any existing SaaS company.”

For young engineers, Nadella offered valuable career advice: “You have to be very good at sampling with agility. Work on the frontier of what’s possible while optimizing what you’ve already built. Simultaneously explore what’s coming and refine the tools of today.”

Looking ahead, Nadella expressed excitement about AI’s impact on science and innovation.

“Having models that impact chemistry, biology, and molecular dynamics will be breakthroughs. Science, especially AI for science and quantum computing, will define the next big leap,” he predicted.

Nadella concluded with a call to action for businesses hesitant to embrace new technologies: “You can’t get fit by watching others go to the gym. Start experimenting, deploy at scale, and refine relentlessly.” His insights reveal a future where adaptability and innovation are key to thriving in an AI-driven world.
