Public Opposition to AI Data Centers Grows as Surveys Highlight Energy and Community Concerns

Public sentiment toward AI infrastructure is becoming increasingly divided, as new surveys reveal rising resistance to data center development despite continued demand for artificial intelligence services. A Harvard and MIT poll found that 40% of respondents supported building a data center in their area, while 32% opposed it, with many expressing concerns over local impact.

The findings highlighted that energy costs remain a central issue, with roughly two-thirds of respondents indicating concern that data centers could drive up electricity prices. Interest in job creation and economic growth provided some support, although data centers typically generate limited long-term employment.

A separate survey by Quinnipiac University showed stronger opposition, with 65% of Americans against AI data centers in their communities. The results suggest growing political and public scrutiny as AI infrastructure expands.
