A Harvard and MIT poll found that 40% of respondents supported building a data center in their area, while 32% opposed it, with many expressing concerns over local impact.
The findings highlighted that energy costs remain a central issue, with roughly two-thirds of respondents indicating concern that data centers could drive up electricity prices. Interest in job creation and economic growth provided some support, although data centers typically generate limited long-term employment.
A separate survey by Quinnipiac University showed stronger opposition, with 65% of Americans against AI data centers in their communities. The results suggest growing political and public scrutiny as AI infrastructure expands.
