DeepSeek’s Low-Cost AI Disrupts Global Tech Markets

The launch of DeepSeek, a low-cost chatbot developed by Chinese AI company DeepSeek, has shaken the global tech industry, sending shockwaves through stock markets and raising questions about the future of AI dominance. Powered by the open-source DeepSeek-V3 model, developed for just $6 million, the app has rapidly overtaken competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT to become the most downloaded free app in the U.S.

The announcement sent shares of major U.S. technology firms into a tailspin. NVIDIA saw a 16% drop, while Broadcom plunged nearly 18%. Other industry giants, including Microsoft and Alphabet, experienced significant declines. European firms like ASML and Siemens Energy were similarly affected, reflecting widespread concerns over the potential impact of low-cost AI models on profit margins and investments in AI infrastructure.

DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng, an AI entrepreneur from Hangzhou, leveraged a mix of NVIDIA A100 chips and lower-cost components to develop the groundbreaking model. Industry experts noted that the app’s reliance on open-source technology and innovative approaches has drastically reduced costs, challenging the massive expenditures of rivals.

While some analysts caution that DeepSeek may face challenges due to restrictions on advanced chips, others see its emergence as a transformative moment, reshaping the competitive landscape of AI. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen described the development as “AI’s Sputnik moment,” signaling a significant shift in the global AI race.
