SignalFire, a data-focused venture capital firm, has released new research suggesting that generative AI is already reshaping hiring practices across the tech industry. Drawing from LinkedIn data on over 600 million professionals and 80 million companies, SignalFire found that Big Tech firms reduced hiring of new graduates by 25% in 2024 compared to 2023. Startup graduate hiring also declined, down 11% year over year.
Asher Bantock, SignalFire’s head of research, said there is “convincing evidence” that AI’s ability to automate routine, entry-level tasks is contributing to these trends. Meanwhile, demand for mid-career talent remains strong, with Big Tech increasing hiring of professionals with two to five years of experience by 27%.
Heather Doshay, the firm’s talent partner, urged new graduates to adapt by mastering AI tools, stating, “AI won’t take your job if you’re the one who’s best at using it.”
