OpenAI Cloud Agreement with Google Confirmed Despite Rivalry in AI Market

Google has confirmed a new cloud computing partnership with OpenAI, its chief competitor in the generative AI space, marking a significant twist in the escalating AI landscape. CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the deal during Alphabet’s Q2 earnings call, expressing enthusiasm for supporting OpenAI’s AI model training and deployment on Google Cloud infrastructure.

The partnership arrives as Google ramps up capital expenditures — adding $10 billion this year — to scale its AI capabilities, while also growing its cloud business. Google Cloud revenue reached $13.6 billion in Q2 2025, driven in part by major AI clients such as Anthropic, Safe Superintelligence, World Labs, and now OpenAI.

Despite their rivalry, OpenAI has added Google Cloud to its list of infrastructure providers alongside Microsoft and Oracle. The move highlights ongoing GPU shortages and OpenAI’s need for expanded compute capacity beyond its primary partner, Microsoft. Google, with a deep reserve of Nvidia GPUs and proprietary TPU chips, now plays a critical role in powering some of the very models challenging its core search business.

With OpenAI’s ChatGPT threatening Google Search’s dominance, the collaboration underscores the complex, high-stakes competition defining the AI era — where infrastructure partnerships may blur the lines between ally and adversary.
