Meta Hires Longtime Apple Design Leader Alan Dye to Drive AI-Infused Consumer Devices

Meta has appointed Alan Dye, the former head of Apple’s user interface design team, to lead a new creative studio within Reality Labs focused on shaping the next generation of AI-powered consumer hardware. Dye will report directly to CTO Andrew Bosworth and concentrate on elevating the design and AI experience across products such as smart glasses and virtual and mixed-reality headsets.

Dye spent a decade overseeing user interface design at Apple and contributed to major platforms across the company’s ecosystem. His departure marks a high-profile shift in the competition for design and AI leadership in consumer tech. At Apple, his role will be filled by Steve Lemay, a veteran designer who has contributed to Apple’s most influential interfaces since 1999.

Dye will lead a newly formed Meta studio unifying design, fashion, and advanced technology, joining forces with Billy Sorrentino, Joshua To, Pete Bristol, and Jason Rubin. Meta is expanding recruitment from top rivals as it accelerates development of AI-enabled hardware experiences that blend software intelligence with iconic product design.
