Google has filed suit against an alleged Chinese cybercrime network called Outsider Enterprise, accusing it of using artificial intelligence to operate a large-scale phishing platform that has stolen an estimated $1.9 billion from victims across 95 countries since July 2023.
The network deployed over one million fraudulent web domains and sent 2.5 million scam texts to Android users in a two-week period, using AI tools including Google’s own Gemini to generate fake websites impersonating telecoms, banks, and government agencies. The phishing software, sold for $88 per week, required no technical expertise to operate.
Google said it has been working with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and the FBI, which seized several domains connected to the operation. Google is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
