Einride, Lidl Deploy Autonomous Truck on German Public Road

Insider Brief

  • Einride and Lidl in Germany have begun daily public-road operations with a cab-less SAE Level 4 autonomous truck running without a driver or onboard safety operator between a Lidl distribution site and store.
  • Einride said the deployment operates under what the companies described as Germany’s first permit of its kind from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, moving the project beyond a limited demonstration into regular retail logistics.
  • Lidl, part of Schwarz Group, is testing how autonomous freight can support its logistics network, with plans to expand the route into a multi-stop milkrun model and potentially add deployments across other Schwarz Group companies.

Einride and Lidl in Germany have begun using a cab-less autonomous truck in daily operations on a public road, transporting goods between a Lidl warehouse and distribution center and a Lidl store.

According to Einride, the truck operates without a driver or safety operator onboard under an SAE Level 4 permit from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, or KBA. Einride and Lidl described it as the first permit of its kind granted in Germany. The deployment puts the autonomous truck into regular use rather than a limited demonstration.

Lidl, part of Schwarz Group, is using the project to test how autonomous freight can be integrated into its logistics network while addressing driver shortages and maintaining the flow of goods.

“Einride is already running real autonomous deliveries, with real volumes on real schedules with customers in the U.S and Europe,” Einride CEO Roozbeh Charli said in the announcement. “Germany is one of Einride’s key markets and we’re excited to now bring this technology to public roads in Europe’s largest road transport market, and to prove its value together with Lidl and the broader ecosystem of Schwarz Group. Germany’s approval process is among the toughest in the world, and obtaining clearance there gives us a foundation to scale with confidence.”

The current route connects a Lidl warehouse and distribution center directly with a store. Einride and Lidl plan to expand the operation into a multi-stop “milkrun” model, with additional deployments across Schwarz Group companies also under discussion.

Lidl said it will evaluate the technology step by step under real operating conditions to determine how autonomous trucks could fit into its site logistics.
