DeepMind Co-Founder Mustafa Suleyman Appointed CEO of Microsoft’s Newly Formed AI Division, Overseeing Copilot & More

Microsoft has recruited Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of the AI research company DeepMind, as the executive vice president and CEO of its new Microsoft AI division, which will focus on Copilot AI in Bing, Windows, and other products.

Suleyman, who left Alphabet in 2022 to lead Inflection AI, is joined by Inflection’s chief scientist, Karén Simonyan, and other team members at Microsoft.

This move bolsters Microsoft’s AI capabilities as it competes with Google, which has recently dealt with controversies surrounding its AI technologies.

“I’ve known Mustafa for several years and have greatly admired him as a founder of both DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of pioneering teams that go after bold missions,” CEO Satya Nadella wrote in a Microsoft memo.
