Samsung to Release AI-Powered Upgrade of Bixby Voice Assistant This Year

Samsung will launch an upgraded version of its voice assistant Bixby this year, leveraging its own artificial intelligence models, according to TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile business.

“We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products,” Roh said. “As consumers use more AI capabilities they can actually feel the convenience and benefits they bring. I believe strongly that these Galaxy AI, mobile AI are strong motivations and drivers for the purchase of new products.”

The new Bixby will utilize Samsung’s large language model (LLM) and generative AI technology, offering advanced features. Originally launched in 2017 with the Galaxy S8, Bixby provides functions like live translations, restaurant recommendations, and information via the Bixby Vision tool.

Despite this upgrade, Samsung will continue to support multiple voice assistants on its devices, including Google’s AI assistant.

This Bixby enhancement is part of Samsung’s broader strategy to incorporate AI features across its devices. The announcement comes shortly after Apple’s reveal of an AI upgrade for Siri, integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Samsung also introduced new foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, alongside new AI tools to promote its premium smartphones.
