Leading Foundations Launch “Humanity AI,” a $500M Initiative to Ensure AI Serves People and Communities

A coalition of major U.S. philanthropic organizations has unveiled Humanity AI, a five-year, $500 million effort aimed at ensuring artificial intelligence strengthens society and protects human creativity, opportunity, and safety. The initiative brings together ten prominent foundations — including the Doris Duke Foundation, Ford Foundation, Lumina Foundation, Kapor Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Mellon Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, Omidyar Network, Packard Foundation, and Siegel Family Endowment — to support a future in which AI empowers workers, reinforces democratic values, and safeguards cultural expression.

Humanity AI will mobilize funding across core focus areas such as democracy, education, labor and the economy, cultural protection, and security. The initiative will begin aligned grantmaking in fall 2025, with pooled fund distribution managed by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors starting in 2026. The coalition affirmed that decisions shaping AI’s development must reflect the needs and interests of people and communities — not solely technology leaders — to ensure AI remains a force for public good.
