Amazon has embarked on a significant foray into artificial intelligence (AI) with the introduction of Rufus, a new AI shopping assistant, announced on Thursday. Rufus aims to transform the shopping experience by enabling users to search for products through conversational queries within Amazon’s mobile app. Whether asking about the nuances between different types of running shoes or comparing coffee makers, Rufus enhances product discovery by leveraging Amazon’s vast product catalogue, customer insights, and web information to provide informed responses.
“Rufus meaningfully improves how easy it is for customers to find and discover the best products to meet their needs,” Amazon said in a blog post.
Currently in a trial phase with a select group of US users, Amazon plans to extend Rufus’s services nationwide in the near future. This initiative is part of a broader strategy outlined by CEO Andy Jassy to integrate generative AI technology across Amazon’s diverse business sectors. The company’s enthusiasm for AI extends beyond retail; it has recently launched several AI-driven tools and services, including AI to assist with shopper queries, summarize reviews, aid third-party sellers in crafting listings, as well as Q and Bedrock, aimed at business users and cloud customers, respectively. Amazon’s ongoing AI ventures and updates on these efforts are anticipated to be highlighted in their fourth-quarter earnings report.
