CEO of Perplexity AI Discusses Creating Personalized Search: “It’s Like ChatGPT & Wikipedia Having a Baby”

In an insightful presentation at the “Forging the Future of Business with AI” Summit, Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, discussed the future of personalized search. Describing his company’s product, he stated: “It’s like ChatGPT and Wikipedia having a baby together and that is Perplexity.”

Srinivas explained that traditional search engines provide a one-size-fits-all experience, forcing users to sift through extensive information. In contrast, Perplexity aims to deliver personalized and contextualized answers by combining the reasoning capabilities of large language models with curated factual knowledge bases.

“How would it look like if we combine the two together and bring the world’s knowledge and give it to you in a personalized conversational manner at your fingertips everywhere? That’s what Perplexity is,” Srinivas elaborated.

The key to Perplexity’s approach lies in orchestrating multiple AI models to understand user intent, retrieve relevant information, and present digestible answers. Srinivas emphasized: “You have to go about and beyond to understand the user intent and answer like present the answers differently according to the type of query.”

Looking ahead, Srinivas predicts a multimodal future where users can interact with AI assistants through voice, vision and augmented reality devices.

“Imagine you can talk to any device ideally right, like that doesn’t have to be just your phone and you ask questions,” he said, hinting at Perplexity’s ambitions to revolutionize search beyond text-based queries.

With a rapid ascent from PhD studies to founding a unicorn AI startup in under two years, Srinivas embodies the risk-taking spirit he attributes to his academic journey.

“A PhD generally teaches you to take a lot of risk, be aggressive — that’s a common feature between doing a PhD and doing a startup,” he reflected.

As AI continues to advance, Perplexity’s vision of a personalized, multimodal search experience powered by state-of-the-art AI models could redefine how we access and consume information in the digital age.
