Trump Announces $500B AI Megaproject: Stargate

U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled “Stargate,” an ambitious artificial intelligence (AI) initiative with an estimated budget of $500 billion. Spearheaded by tech giants SoftBank, Oracle and OpenAI, the project aims to build cutting-edge AI infrastructure in the United States, including 20 colossal data centers, each spanning 500,000 square feet.

Trump described Stargate as a bold step to cement America’s leadership in AI, reportedly stating it is a “declaration of confidence in America’s potential.” The project is set to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and generate significant economic benefits globally, according to OpenAI.

The initiative’s cornerstone is its AI-powered infrastructure. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, revealed that an initial $100 billion would be invested, with plans to scale up to $500 billion within four years. OpenAI emphasized that Stargate would solidify the U.S. as a global AI leader, while Oracle’s Larry Ellison highlighted the scale of energy and computing resources required to drive next-generation AI development.

Construction has already begun in Texas, targeting the growing need for specialized data centers to power AI. However, as AI accelerates energy demands, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation has warned of potential power supply challenges in the coming decade.

Tech leaders such as Sam Altman (OpenAI), Masayoshi Son (SoftBank) and Larry Ellison (Oracle) have expressed support for the initiative, citing Trump’s leadership as pivotal. Altman, a founding figure in OpenAI, stated that Stargate represents a critical opportunity to ensure America remains at the forefront of AI innovation.

Meanwhile, Trump’s repeal of AI safety legislation enacted by his predecessor has sparked criticism. Experts, like RMIT’s Associate Professor Dana McKay, warn that rapid AI advancement under reduced oversight may exacerbate societal inequalities and increase risks, including biased decision-making and privacy violations.

With Stargate, the U.S. aims to redefine the AI landscape, positioning itself as a global hub for AI innovation and infrastructure. Backed by tech visionaries and an unprecedented budget, the project is set to push the boundaries of AI development, though not without controversy.
