Frenos Closes $3.88M Seed Financing Round Led by DataTribe to Transform Proactive Defense in Critical Infrastructure Environments

Insider Brief

  • Frenos raised $3.88 million in funding led by DataTribe to expand its autonomous OT security assessment platform for critical infrastructure.
  • The AI-native platform creates a digital network twin to analyze threats, prioritize risks, and provide contextual remediation without disrupting operations.
  • Frenos shifts OT security from detection-and-response to prediction-and-prevention, enabling infrastructure operators to proactively defend against cyber threats.

PRESS RELEASE — Frenos, the first autonomous operational technology (OT) security assessment platform, has announced the completion of a $3.88 million financing round, led by DataTribe, the leading global cyber foundry that invests in and co-builds next-generation cybersecurity and data science companies. This funding comes on the heels of Frenos winning the Seventh Annual DataTribe Challenge startup competition, beating out hundreds of cybersecurity and data science startups for its technological superiority. The funds will accelerate the advancement of the Frenos Platform and expand the company’s go-to market presence across every sector of critical infrastructure.

“Today’s OT attack surface bears little resemblance to the analog, non-routable, and air-gapped systems of the past decade. Frenos ensures critical infrastructure operators understand and build preemptive defenses across their expansive service territories and complex environments cost-effectively and efficiently,” said Brian Proctor, Co-Founder and CEO of Frenos. “Frenos is the first autonomous OT assessment platform built by OT practitioners for OT practitioners, and we are honored to partner with DataTribe to scale our operations, helping more organizations proactively strengthen their security posture.”

Purpose-built for operational technology environments and developed alongside partners from five OT sectors, the Frenos platform meets the unique security challenges across all sixteen critical infrastructure sectors. The AI-native platform assesses, prioritizes and defends mission critical environments introducing no operational disruption. Utilizing a digital network twin of the environment and an AI reasoning agent, Frenos analyzes the complex ways adversaries could target your critical operations, showing you exactly which combinations of techniques, tactics, and procedures (TTPs) along with vulnerabilities pose the greatest risk. And unlike traditional solutions that overwhelm teams with generic recommendations, the Frenos platform provides contextual, prioritized remediation guidance specific to OT environments, which enable organizations to reduce their risk faster and maximize efficiency.

“The Frenos team brings something rare to OT security: the perfect combination of operator security experience and breakthrough innovation,” said Robert M. Lee, CEO and co-founder of Dragos, and Frenos Advisory Board member. “Frenos is ushering in the next-generation of OT security defenses, and it arrives when all critical infrastructure organizations need help driving data driven insights to make the best choices with their limited OT resources.”

Over the past decade, critical infrastructure operators have been busy deploying first generation OT network monitoring sensors to unlock foundational device inventory and vulnerability identification data while also building threat detection and response capabilities. With these new datasets and capabilities, operational technology programs around the world are maturing and changing their focus and priorities. One key focus in the coming years will be operationalizing this data to allow for proactive defense of their networks.

“DataTribe portfolio companies built the current operational technology security market,” said Mike Janke, co-founder and Investment Board member of DataTribe. “Frenos is leading the shift from OT detection-and-response to prediction-and-prevention. DataTribe is dedicated to partnering with innovators who are pushing the boundaries of modern cybersecurity solutions, and we are proud to join Frenos in its mission to transform OT security.”
