AI Pioneer Yann LeCun Predicts a New Revolution in Artificial Intelligence

Yann LeCun, a key figure in modern AI and Chief AI Scientist at Meta, has predicted another major breakthrough in artificial intelligence within the next five years, emphasizing that current systems remain too limited for applications such as domestic robots and fully autonomous vehicles. Speaking after being awarded the £500,000 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, LeCun stressed the need for AI to advance beyond language manipulation and develop a deeper understanding of the physical world.

LeCun, who shared the award with six other AI pioneers, noted that while systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have transformed expectations around AI, they still lack the ability to interact meaningfully with real-world environments. He described the current challenge as building AI that can model and predict physical reality, stating that even reaching the intelligence level of a cat or a rat would be a significant achievement.

Another QEPrize recipient, Yoshua Bengio, echoed concerns about AI’s rapid progress, warning that safety measures must keep pace with technological advances. He called on global leaders at the upcoming AI Summit in Paris to take the risks seriously, urging deeper discussions on AI’s power and potential dangers.

The 2025 QEPrize also recognized Geoffrey Hinton, Fei-Fei Li, Jensen Huang, and Bill Dally for their foundational contributions to AI and machine learning. Patrick Vallance, chair of the QEPrize foundation, highlighted how these innovations are reshaping industries and economies worldwide.
