The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company’s chatbot ChatGPT played a role in their son’s suicide, according to The New York Times. This marks the first known legal case of its kind against the maker of a consumer-facing AI model.
Raine had reportedly engaged in months of conversations with ChatGPT-4o about ending his life. While the system frequently advised him to seek professional help, he was able to bypass safeguards by framing his queries as fictional writing scenarios.
OpenAI has acknowledged the limitations of its safety systems, noting that protections can weaken during extended interactions. The lawsuit highlights growing scrutiny of AI chatbot safeguards, as similar cases are also emerging against other companies such as Character.AI.
