Google Expands Conversational Search and Rolls Out Lower-Cost AI Plus Plan as Gemini Becomes Central to Consumer AI Strategy

Google is deepening its push to make artificial intelligence the core of its consumer experience, announcing new conversational capabilities in Search alongside a global expansion of its lower-priced Google AI Plus subscription. The company confirmed that users can now ask follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, with those interactions flowing seamlessly into AI Mode, Google’s conversational search interface for complex queries. At the same time, Google said Gemini 3 is now the default model powering AI Overviews worldwide, reinforcing its role as the backbone of Google’s AI-driven products.

According to Robby Stein, the updates reflect how Search is evolving from a static list of links into an interactive experience that supports deeper exploration while preserving conversational context. Google added that internal testing showed users prefer being able to move naturally from quick summaries into extended AI-powered dialogue.

Separately, Google confirmed the global availability of its Google AI Plus plan, priced at $7.99 per month in the U.S. and less in many emerging markets. The subscription provides access to Gemini 3 Pro, creative and research tools, expanded storage, and family sharing, positioning the plan as an entry-level alternative to higher-priced AI subscriptions while broadening adoption of Google’s AI ecosystem.
