Berlin-based Restate has secured a $20 million Series A led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures, as demand for resilient AI agent infrastructure grows.
Co-founder Stephan Ewen launched the company in 2022 to build an execution engine that keeps multistep workflows running through crashes and network interruptions. He said the product was not originally designed for agents but proved an ideal fit, since agent workflows run longer, follow unpredictable paths and require precise tracking to produce consistent, reproducible outcomes.
Restate has recently closed several six- and seven-figure contracts and counts Replit and Fortune 500 firms, including financial companies, among its customers. Rather than relying on an external database, it built its own storage, replication and redundancy layers, which Ewen said makes the system fast, lightweight and cost-effective. The funding positions it to challenge Temporal, which recently raised $550 million at a $12.55 billion valuation.
Ewen co-created Apache Flink and served as CTO of Data Artisans and later Ververica after its acquisition by Alibaba. He co-founded Restate with Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, with former Stripe and Meta engineer Ahmed Farghaljoining as fourth co-founder. The company plans to expand hiring and its San Francisco Bay Area office, and Ewen expects durable execution to become as universal as databases.
