Reddit is ending support for RSS feeds on November 13 and will shut down its public API by March 2027, citing large-scale scraping and automated abuse. The changes come as the platform’s user-generated content has become a lucrative source of revenue through AI licensing deals, with its non-advertising revenue rising 24% year over year to $43 million in the second quarter.
The API shutdown will affect tools that rely on programmatic access to Reddit conversations, including social listening products, research tools and AI assistants. After the closure, AI assistants that currently draw on Reddit to answer questions will need commercial agreements to access its data.
Reddit acknowledged RSS has long been a valued part of the open web and thanked users who relied on it. It recommends that moderators move alert workflows to the Discord Relay Devvit app before the deadline, but said there is no replacement for RSS use outside moderation. Many moderators and users have voiced concern about the impact.
The company is also adding safeguards to Old Reddit, limiting access to logged-in moderators and users active within the past six months, and requires developers of approved third-party apps and bots to register by January 12, 2027, or lose API access.
