Amazon is escalating its involvement in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector with a record $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic, a prominent AI startup specializing in generative AI technologies. This investment, part of a commitment that could reach $4 billion, positions Amazon significantly in the AI innovation race.
Anthropic, known for its chatbot Claude and competing with giants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has been a magnet for funding, securing $7.3 billion across various deals within a year.
Amazon, which will not seek a board position, values the strategic partnership, emphasizing its role as Anthropic’s primary cloud provider and leveraging its own chips for AI model training and deployment.
This move reflects a broader trend of major tech firms, including Microsoft and Google, aggressively funding AI ventures to secure a lead in this transformative technological era.
“Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers’ experiences, and look forward to what’s next,” said Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of data and AI at AWS cloud provider.
