Microsoft Announces $3.2B Investment in Swedish AI, Cloud & Renewable Energy Initiatives

Microsoft plans to invest $3.2 billion in expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure in Sweden over the next two years. The growing popularity of generative AI has increased the demand for cloud services, prompting companies like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to invest heavily in European data centers. Microsoft will deploy 20,000 advanced GPUs at its Swedish data centers in Sandviken, Gavle, and Staffanstorp, using NVIDIA’s processors and potentially AMD and its own chips.

“You will see some other announcements, probably more in the fall,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said in an interview.

The company aims to enhance AI adoption throughout the Nordic region, including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway. In the next three years, Microsoft intends to train 250,000 people in Sweden in AI skills across different industries. Additionally, the company is investing in renewable energy, securing nearly 1,000 MW in Sweden.

“AI is a tech transformation that should be seen as a multiplier or catalyst … It is part of the strategy going forward when, after successfully fighting inflation, we enter a new phase, an investment phase,” said Ulf Kristersson, Prime Minister of Sweden.
