SoftBank to Lead OpenAI’s $40B Funding Round at $300B Valuation

SoftBank Group is in discussions to lead a record-breaking $40 billion funding round for OpenAI, potentially valuing the AI powerhouse at $300 billion, according to sources cited by Reuters. The investment, which would be one of the largest single rounds ever raised by a private company, reflects OpenAI’s accelerating growth and strategic importance in the global AI landscape.

The move comes amid increased competition in the AI sector, particularly following the launch of DeepSeek, a low-cost AI model from China that has disrupted industry pricing expectations. SoftBank’s valuation of OpenAI has reportedly surged from $150 billion to $260 billion in recent months as part of ongoing negotiations.

Sources indicate that SoftBank could invest between $15 billion and $25 billion, with some funds earmarked for OpenAI’s commitment to Stargate, a joint AI infrastructure project with Oracle and SoftBank, aimed at securing U.S. leadership in AI development.

The deal is contingent on OpenAI restructuring its business to reduce the control of its non-profit arm, similar to conditions set in previous funding rounds. While SoftBank, OpenAI, and Microsoft declined to comment, reports suggest the investment discussions are in early stages.
