AMD Acquires Silicon Photonics Startup Enosemi to Advance AI Data Movement Capabilities

AMD has acquired Enosemi, a Silicon Valley-based startup specializing in custom materials and photonic integrated circuits, to bolster its silicon photonics and co-packaged optics innovation for next-generation AI systems. Terms of the deal, announced Wednesday, were not disclosed.

Brian Amick, AMD’s SVP of Technology and Engineering, said the acquisition marks a strategic expansion of AMD’s photonics capabilities. “As AI models continue to grow in scale and complexity, the demand for high-speed, energy-efficient data movement is accelerating. Enosemi has been a valuable development partner, and now, as part of AMD, they’ll help us scale our co-packaged optics solutions even faster,” he said in a blog post.

Founded in 2023 by Ari Novack and Matthew Streshinsky, Enosemi designs photonic chips that integrate computing and networking functions, including optical interconnects for data centers. The startup had 16 employees and previously raised $150,000 in venture capital prior to its acquisition.

This is AMD’s first acquisition since its multibillion-dollar deal for ZT Systems and further underscores its commitment to scaling AI infrastructure. AMD reported $5 billion in AI chip revenue for 2024, reflecting aggressive investment in the sector.
