OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and key members of the GPT-5 team took to Reddit’s r/ChatGPT for an AMA, fielding questions on the company’s latest AI model, user concerns, and the now-infamous “chart crime” from its launch presentation.
Altman acknowledged that a faulty real-time router — designed to determine whether GPT-5 should respond quickly or take more time to “think” — had caused the model to appear less capable than its predecessor, GPT-4o, when it launched. He confirmed the issue was fixed and announced plans to double Plus user rate limits during rollout.
Responding to strong calls to reinstate GPT-4o for Plus subscribers, Altman said the team was exploring the option while gathering data on tradeoffs. He also addressed the viral “chart crime” mishap, describing it as a major error, while assuring users that OpenAI would continue refining GPT-5 and incorporating feedback.
