OpenAI Launches Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, Expanding AI Into E-Commerce

OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, enabling U.S. users to purchase products from Etsy directly within conversations, with access to more than one million Shopify merchants, including brands like Glossier, Skims, and Spanx, coming soon. The feature allows logged-in Free, Plus, and Pro users to complete orders using Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, or credit cards without leaving the chat.

Built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed with Stripe, the system is being open-sourced to allow broader merchant adoption. OpenAI emphasized that product results are organic and unsponsored, with merchants paying only a small fee per completed transaction. By embedding payments into AI interactions, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a new power broker in online retail, directly challenging discovery platforms like Google and Amazon.
