Amazon Expands Alexa for Shopping with New AI Tools for Alerts and Scam Detection

Amazon this week rolled out two new AI-powered additions to its Alexa for Shopping assistant, continuing a broader push to make the tool more proactive in guiding customers through purchases and protecting them from fraud.

On Tuesday, Amazon introduced a feature called “Update Me When,” which lets shoppers set up personalized notifications for events that might prompt a purchase — such as a favorite brand launching a new product line, an author releasing a new book, an artist announcing a tour, or a tech company unveiling a new device. The company noted that customers currently have to configure these alerts themselves, though the feature signals a shift from Alexa simply answering direct product questions toward anticipating shopper interest before it’s expressed.

On Wednesday, Amazon announced that Alexa for Shopping would also help customers determine whether messages claiming to be from Amazon are legitimate or scams. The company said roughly 360,000 customers contact its support team annually with such questions, and that its AI can check suspicious messages against the billions Amazon has sent globally, analyzing sender details, content, timing, and metadata to assess authenticity. Amazon said the system would improve as more customers flag suspicious messages. The tool builds on earlier anti-scam efforts, including a dedicated verification email address and an online reporting form introduced earlier this year, aimed at combating fake order confirmations, phony Prime renewal notices, and other common scams.

Together, the two launches reflect Amazon’s evolving AI strategy for Alexa, which now also includes personalized deal sourcing, shopping guide creation, price-history tracking, AI-generated product overviews, handwritten list transcription, and automatic cart building from past purchases. Alexa for Shopping remains accessible through both Amazon’s website and its mobile app.
