Crusoe Ends $1.25B Turbine Deal With Boom Supersonic for AI Data Centers

Denver-based AI data center builder Crusoe has ended its plan to use stationary power plants from fellow Denver company Boom Supersonic, scrapping a $1.25 billion agreement for 29 of Boom’s 42-megawatt Superpower natural gas turbines that were due for delivery starting in 2027.

Boom CEO Blake Scholl confirmed on X that the companies are no longer pursuing the launch partnership, after congratulating Crusoe founders Cully Cavness and Chase Lochmiller on their recent $3.9 billion raise. He said Boom will still deliver about 250 megawatts of Superpowers to other sites next year and is targeting 1 gigawatt in 2028, adding that the companies could team up again if turbines become part of Crusoe’s primary power mix.

Crusoe spokesperson Andrew Schmitt said the company’s energy plans have not changed and that it still intends to use turbines, just not Boom’s. He said Crusoe builds AI factories from the power up and chooses energy sources for each site, including turbines, wind, solar, batteries and the grid.

Crusoe’s 1.2-gigawatt Abilene, Texas campus for Oracle and OpenAI runs on grid power with gas turbines as backup, while a 900-megawatt Abilene site for Microsoft will use on-site gas turbines. The loss of its launch customer is a setback for Boom, which raised $300 million last year largely to commercialize the turbine business and help fund its Overturesupersonic jet.
