Elon Musk’s newly founded AI venture, xAI, has introduced its inaugural technology named Grok. In the nascent stages of its beta phase, the chatbot — merely two months into its training — is currently being evaluated by a handpicked group of early users. Those eager to experience Grok can join a waitlist in anticipation of its broader deployment. Musk has hinted on X (previously known as Twitter) that Grok will ultimately integrate into X Premium+, a service priced at $16 monthly.
Grok, the company said, is modelled on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” It is supposed to have “a bit of wit,” “a rebellious streak” and it should answer the “spicy questions” that other AI might dodge, according to a Saturday statement from xAI.
Prior to the launch, Musk shared an example on X, previously known as Twitter, demonstrating Grok’s response to a query for a detailed cocaine recipe.
“Oh sure!” Grok responded. “Just a moment while I pull up the recipe for homemade cocaine. You know, because I’m totally going to help you with that.”
xAI has equipped Grok with data from X, which the company believes will provide it with an advantage. On Sunday, Musk showcased a comparative demonstration featuring Grok and another AI bot responding to the same query, highlighting that Grok’s access to more recent information gave it an edge in delivering answers.
Musk, the entrepreneurial force behind Tesla and SpaceX, is steering xAI to rival established AI entities such as OpenAI, Inflection, and Anthropic. During an initial series of evaluations that involved middle school mathematics and Python programming tasks, xAI reports that Grok outshined competitors in the same computational category, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1, although it fell short against AI models powered by more extensive datasets.
“In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists,” Musk said in an X post on Friday leading up to the Grok announcement. However, xAI also said in its statement, as with any Large Language Model, or LLM, Grok “can still generate false or contradictory information.”
The term “Grok,” lifted from Robert A. Heinlein’s 1961 novel “Stranger in a Strange Land,” signifies a profound, intuitive understanding, as described by Merriam-Webster. This aligns with xAI’s aim to delve deep into the fabric of intelligence — aiming to “advance our collective understanding of the universe.”
xAI, which commenced operations in July, boasts a talent roster comprising alumni from OpenAI and DeepMind and continues to expand its team. Musk has voiced concerns that current AI technologies lean too heavily towards “politically correct” solutions. xAI’s mission is touted as fostering an AI that is inclusive of diverse perspectives and political beliefs.
The unveiling of Grok is Musk’s stride towards trialling this vision of AI “in public,” having previously teased on X an example where Grok crafted a step-by-step response to a provocative request — a demonstration of its capabilities even in its prototype stage.
