Michelin Present The Unbounded Potential of AI

BEYOND 2024, dubbed the most sought-after AI event of the year, became a melting pot for thought leaders and innovators in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) last month. Among the experts speaking there was Ambica Rajagopal, Group Chief Data and AI Officer at Michelin India, who delivered a compelling insight into the transformative journey of AI at Michelin.

Rajagopal began by setting the stage with a reflection on Michelin’s evolution in AI.

“We’ve gone from like a startup to the pace still feels tremendous,” said Rajagopal. This statement encapsulates the rapid and ambitious advancement Michelin has experienced in the realm of AI under her leadership. It wasn’t just about adopting new technologies but embedding AI into the core of Michelin’s operational ethos.

A critical aspect of Michelin’s strategy, as highlighted by Rajagopal, is the emphasis on independence and impact through AI.

“It’s to build independence and impact in AI through value realization and technology leadership,” she said. This mission statement, then, underpins the notion that AI at Michelin isn’t merely a tool but a pivotal element in driving operational efficiencies and innovation.

The path to achieving such a vision involved overcoming considerable challenges, especially in the realm of product integration and process optimization. Rajagopal candidly shared: “AI is where it’s really effective is in modeling processes that are that defeat traditional methods of modeling.”

The journey involved nurturing expertise, building trust and forging partnerships, all while focusing on the tangible value realization of AI technologies.

Michelin’s AI transformation wasn’t just about implementing AI for the sake of technology. Rajagopal stressed the importance of a holistic approach.

“Developing our own ability, our own understanding of what AI processes are, what AI means for Michelin processes, that’s the independence part,” she said, underscoring the need for companies to not just adopt AI but to adapt it within their unique operational frameworks to unlock its full potential.

BEYOND 2024 presented a platform for leaders like Rajagopal to share their experiences and visions, reflecting on how AI’s limitless potential can be harnessed responsibly and effectively. As Michelin continues to lead by example, the insights shared at the event underscore the broader industry movement towards a future where AI’s impact is as profound as it is positive.
