In a world where diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of preventable blindness, Dr. R. Kim, Chief Medical Officer of Aravind Eye Care System, shared an exciting collaboration with Google Research in a recent interview to combat this challenge through AI technology. The project, known as ARDA (Automated Retinal Disease Assessment), aims to scale early detection of the disease and has already made significant strides, screening over half a million patients.
Kim expressed awe at the “sheer magnitude of how much you can do with AI,” saying that screenings for diabetic retinopathy increased eightfold after ARDA’s deployment. This transformation highlights the immense potential of AI in scaling healthcare solutions.
“What amazes me is how technology helps us reach more people. Before AI, we couldn’t even imagine scaling like this,” he said.
The success of ARDA underscores the importance of collaboration between technology and healthcare providers. Kim described the journey with Google as “really amazing” and paid attention to the impact: “This partnership was a game-changer for us. It allowed us to reach many more people and improve patient care.”
However, the integration of AI isn’t without its challenges. Reflecting on initial hurdles, Kim said: “At the beginning, we focused 100% on the technology, but we soon realized we needed to build the right environment to uptake the technology into the system.”
Looking to the future, Kim pictures AI playing an even larger role, not just in screening but also in personalizing treatment for various diseases.
“AI will go a long way in personalizing treatment,” he said, “understanding not just any patient but the patient, and tailoring care to their specific needs.”
For Kim, AI’s potential to eliminate needless blindness is clear. The key, he believes, lies in partnerships that harness both “deep technology and deep science” to revolutionize patient care on a global scale.
