Apple Temporarily Halts AI-Powered Summaries Due to Accuracy Challenges

Apple has paused its AI-powered notification summaries, a core feature of Apple Intelligence, for beta software users following concerns about inaccuracies in its AI-generated news summaries. The decision highlights the difficulties Apple faces as it integrates artificial intelligence into its ecosystem.

The suspension comes weeks after reports, including one from the BBC, revealed instances where Apple’s AI system had misrepresented facts in news notifications. Users running beta versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS noticed a message in the News & Entertainment section of settings stating that AI summaries were “temporarily unavailable.”

An Apple representative told CNBC that the company is working on software improvements, which will roll out in a future update. Apple did not confirm a release timeline for the stable version of iOS 18.3, but previous patterns suggest the update may take weeks.

The missteps in Apple’s AI feature rollout underscore broader challenges in AI adoption. Introduced in October, Apple Intelligence was marketed as a signature feature for the latest iPhone models, offering tools like image generation and automated notification summaries. While promising efficiency, these AI summaries have drawn criticism for generating false or misleading headlines.

Notable errors include a BBC notification falsely stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested and another suggesting Rafael Nadal, a Spanish tennis star, was Brazilian and gay. These mistakes have fueled skepticism about Apple’s AI capabilities, with users taking to social media to voice concerns.

The company’s stock fell 4% on the same day, with analysts citing doubts about whether Apple Intelligence is driving demand for the company’s hardware.
