Rakovina Therapeutics Inc. (TSX-V: RKV) (FSE: 7JO), a biopharmaceutical company pioneering DNA-damage response therapies, has reaffirmed its strategic partnership with Variational AI. The announcement follows Variational AI’s successful $5.5 million oversubscribed financing round, led by Nimbus Synergies with participation from Flying Fish Ventures, Merck Global Health Innovation Fund, A&E Investments, Defined Capital, and Threshold Impact. The investment bolsters Variational AI’s ability to advance its Enki™ foundation model, an AI-driven drug discovery platform integral to Rakovina’s mission of developing next-generation cancer treatments.
Jeffrey Bacha, Executive Chairman of Rakovina Therapeutics, emphasized that Variational AI’s recent funding success reflects the growing confidence in AI’s transformative role in oncology drug development. He stated that the Enki™ foundation model enables Rakovina to integrate state-of-the-art generative AI in its precision oncology pipeline, accelerating the discovery of novel therapeutics targeting DNA-damage response (DDR) pathways.
Since the partnership’s inception in September 2024, Rakovina and Variational AI have collaborated to develop AI-powered generative models for identifying promising kinase inhibitors. By early 2025, the partnership had successfully shortlisted ATR inhibitors, a critical class of compounds known for their ability to selectively target and eliminate cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. The first preclinical results are expected in Q2 2025, marking a key milestone in the program.
Handol Kim, CEO of Variational AI, underscored the importance of AI in transforming early-stage drug discovery. He noted that the additional funding will expand Enki™’s capabilities and deepen the company’s collaboration with Rakovina, accelerating the identification and optimization of breakthrough cancer therapies.
Rakovina plans to further its AI-driven discovery initiatives by targeting additional DDR pathways and advancing promising candidates into preclinical development. The partnership with Variational AI represents a significant step in leveraging artificial intelligence to expedite the development of novel oncology treatments.
