OpenAI has agreed to acquire Windsurf, an AI-powered coding platform formerly known as Codeium, in a deal valued at approximately $3 billion, according to Bloomberg. The acquisition, which has not yet closed, would mark OpenAI’s largest to date and further strengthen its position in the AI-assisted software development space.
Windsurf had recently been in funding discussions with General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins at a $3 billion valuation, following a $150 million round in August 2023 that valued the company at $1.25 billion. The acquisition is expected to enhance the coding capabilities of ChatGPT, complementing OpenAI’s ongoing rollout of developer tools and enterprise-focused AI infrastructure, amid surging user growth and competitive pressure.
