Andreessen Horowitz Report Finds ChatGPT Rivals Gaining Ground in Consumer AI Market

Andreessen Horowitz has released its fifth report on the consumer AI landscape, revealing that Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and Meta AI are narrowing the gap with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the dominant AI chatbot. The study draws on more than two years of market data from Similarweb and Sensor Tower, tracking web and mobile adoption across leading AI products.

For the fifth time, 14 companies — including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Character AI, Midjourney, and Hugging Face — appeared on the top list of AI platforms. Google gained notable momentum, with Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs all entering the rankings. Gemini has become the second most-used AI assistant on both web and mobile, with nearly 90% of its mobile users on Android.

Meanwhile, Grok reached 20 million monthly active users, ranking fourth on the web and 23rd on mobile, boosted by the launch of Grok 4. Meta AI held steady but faced headwinds over privacy concerns. The report also highlighted strong activity from Chinese AI developers such as ByteDance’s Doubao and Moonshot AI’s Kimi, underscoring the increasingly global competition in consumer-facing AI tools.
