Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has laid off 500 members of its 1,500-strong data annotation team, according to internal communications reported by Business Insider. The move, announced late Friday, reflects what the company described as a strategic pivot toward scaling specialist AI tutor development.
The cuts affect generalist AI tutor positions, with xAI indicating these roles are no longer required as it accelerates focus on advanced tutoring systems. The annotation team had been central in preparing data to train Grok, the company’s chatbot.
In a statement on X, xAI confirmed plans to expand its specialist AI tutor workforce tenfold, targeting areas such as STEM, finance, medicine, and safety as the company sharpens its AI ambitions.
