OpenAI Acquires Software Applications, Inc. to Accelerate Mac-Based AI Experiences

OpenAI announced it has acquired Software Applications, Inc., the company behind Sky, an AI-powered natural language interface for Mac designed to work seamlessly across the desktop environment. The technology, which has not yet been publicly released, enables AI-driven assistance for writing, planning, coding, and executing actions across apps by understanding on-screen context — a key step in bringing agentic AI directly into everyday workflows for consumers and businesses using Mac.

The founding team joining OpenAI includes CEO Ari Weinstein, CTO Conrad Kramer, and COO Kim Beverett, well-known for previously creating Workflow, which Apple acquired and transformed into Shortcuts. The acquisition was led internally by Head of ChatGPT Nick Turley and CEO of Applications Fidji Simo, with approval from OpenAI’s board. The startup had raised $6.5 million from investors including Sam Altman, Dylan Field, Context Ventures, and Stellation Capital.
