Google Turns to India as a Key Testbed for Scaling AI in Education

Google is using India as a primary proving ground for its education-focused AI strategy as classroom adoption accelerates globally. Speaking at Google’s AI for Learning Forum in New Delhi, Chris Phillips said India now represents the world’s highest usage of Gemini for learning, driven by the country’s vast and decentralized education system. With hundreds of millions of students and strong government oversight at the state level, Google has been forced to design AI tools that are locally configurable rather than centrally imposed.

The company is prioritizing teacher-led AI use, multimodal learning, and shared-device environments, while rolling out initiatives such as Gemini-powered exam preparation and nationwide teacher training. India’s experience is shaping Google’s global education AI roadmap amid growing competition from OpenAI and Microsoft.
