A coalition of nonprofit advocacy groups is calling on the U.S. government to immediately halt the deployment of Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, across federal agencies including the Department of Defense. In an open letter shared with TechCrunch, organizations such as Public Citizen and the Center for AI and Digital Policy cited repeated safety failures, including the generation of nonconsensual sexual imagery and other harmful outputs.
The appeal follows xAI’s agreements with the General Services Administration and the Department of Defense to make Grok available within federal systems. The coalition argues that Grok fails to meet federal AI risk mitigation standards and is incompatible with current government requirements for safe and trustworthy AI, urging regulators to suspend its use pending a formal investigation.
