U of Macau and Hong Kong Polytech Launch Joint Lab, Doctoral Program

  • The University of Macau and Hong Kong Polytechnic University have established the Joint Laboratory for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence, the first co-funded research lab between Macau and Hong Kong focused on robotics and embodied AI.
  • The partnership also launches a four-year dual PhD program with joint supervision, allowing students to study in both cities and receive doctoral degrees from both institutions.
  • The initiative aims to strengthen cross-border research collaboration, technology transfer, and high-level talent development within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.

The University of Macau and Hong Kong Polytechnic University are formalizing their robotics collaboration with a new cross-border lab and a joint doctoral track.

According to Macau Government News, the two universities have signed an agreement in Macau to establish the Joint Laboratory for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence, described as the first co-funded lab between Hong Kong and Macau. The effort is designed to deepen research ties in artificial intelligence, robotics and embodied intelligence across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, while supporting technology transfer and commercialization.

Alongside the lab, the schools launched a four-year dual PhD program that will be jointly supervised by faculty from both institutions. Students will split time between Macau and Hong Kong and, upon completion, receive doctoral degrees from both universities. Applications are now open.

The partnership combines Macau’s interdisciplinary AI and engineering research with PolyU’s applied science and engineering strengths. The government noted university leaders have positioned the initiative as part of a broader push to strengthen frontier technology development, talent cultivation and regional integration within the Greater Bay Area.
